About 7km from Phan Rang city to the west, Po Klaong Garai tower is a famous group of towers among destinations in Ninh Thuan. Po Klaong Garai Tower- Cham Culture in Ninh Thuan.
Po Klaong Garai tower is situated on Trau hill, Do Vinh ward, Phan Rang city- Thap Cham. As a complex including Main Tower, Fire Tower and Gate Tower, it is considered as a great and most beautiful group of towers by Cham people.
Tourists go along steps to get the hill, visit the whole Fire Tower of 9 meters with four gates. According to Cham people, it is a rest place and a store of the past rituals.
Gate Tower also has four entrances facing four directions. It is a place for peace of mind before getting into Main Tower.
Main Tower is the center of the tower group. It is 20 meters high with one entrance. In 1979, Po Klaong Garai tower was recognized as a historical and architectural relic of Cham sculpture by Ministry of Culture.
Inside the Main Tower worships the King Po Klaong Garai (1151 – 1205) with the symbol Mukha – Linga. He had a great merit of building hydropower system to serve agriculture of Cham people. The work of this famous king is still used now. It is called Nha Trinh damp and Cham channel.
Tamarind tree is also a highlight of this tower complex. According the Cham legend, the tamarind is where the king Po Klaong Garai leaned when he was young. Another legend says the tamarind is a God defending and protecting the king in the ancient tower.
In the end of October, Cham people in Ninh Thuan usually visit the towers on occasion of Kate festival. People coming here worship for a good harvest. Colorful costumes of Cham girls together with red and white color of Cham leading people is one of attractions in this festival.
Under the foot of Trau hill is a series of construction that serve visitors such as bookstore, Cham gallery, Cham traditional items and souvenirs.
In the gallery, tourists can find ancient items of Cham people such as: rice pounder, traditional music instrument and costumes of Cham monks. In which, buffalo vehicle is one of remaining typical items. The wheels and other items were totally made of wood. Joints were finely connected. Nowadays, there are three remaining ones and shown in cultural houses.
Bags, wallets and cute shawls are sold in the gallery area. However, the price is higher than one in the traditional weaving village My Nghiep, 10 km from Cham tower to the south.
